    Hello, anybody out there...?

Hello everyone!  It's been quite a while (4 months) since I last posted on here - apologies...

During that time I became more and more down about the whole job thing :o(  To the point where I didn't want to make any more journal updates.

However, and I know we've been here before, I've finally had some good news and got myself a new job, in a new company, in a new industry! :o)

I went for 2 interviews in the space of 5 days; was told on the day that they really liked me, and within a few days I picked up their offer and contract. Now, the one thing that had previously stopped me from moving on for so long was the salary, the benefits, the location, etc.  Well, good news, this new company not only matches everything here, but they even exceed it and since the job is different from what I'm doing here I'll be receiving lots of training, lots of customer contact, and lots of experience in the latest technology - hurrrah! :o)

Of course, I read over their offer and contract with a fine tooth-comb, didn't want to get caught out again, and it all read well. So, I handed in my notice here, which wasn't without it's share of fun, and negotiated just 2 weeks of actually working here, then 2 weeks paid leave, and then I start my new job! :o)

And, just to top it off, day 2 of my new job will see me flying off to Dublin for 4 days to partake in celebrations of the new company doing exceedingly well last year - double hurrah! :o)

It shall be a merry Christmas :o)

And, this is the company Napp.

    U-Turn

Well, it was all going so well and then, from what seemed like nowhere, the gods thought they'd play with me!  To explain, what I was verbally offered for the trainer job was not what was written on the contract. In fact, it was several thousand less than what I was told! :(

I had to wait the whole weekend before I could talk to the Trainer manager to clear this up, which did give me time to plan how I was going to handle the situation, but I might as well not bothered. To cut a long story short, they admitted fault completely, but wouldn't budge at all on the salary. Even though it was much less than I was told I could expect and much much less than what was accidentally said when I was verbally offered the position.

It seems that working for this company for 7 years, knowing the products inside out, having the ability to impress them all and actually be offered the Trainer position, wasn't enough for them to meet me half way on salary!! Something they would have saved from not forking out on a recruitment fee from hiring someone externally...

So, it's back to the drawing board on the job-front once more...

To be honest, I'm loosing the will to do something about breaking out of here and doing something more exciting now; everything else doesn't seem to pay as well, requires travelling to by car (now I'm cycling to work), and almost certainly doesn't have the benefits of a free-lunch, BUPA, Dental-Care, pension, gym membership, etc... Yes, I know I'm better off here financially, but I really would like to something that requires actually talking to people and travel every now and then...

I did have a telephone interview today for a consultancy position in another company, which did go very well, but it's based on the Science Park (traffic central!) and like I said before, the salary and benefits aren't as good.  I have reached a stage in my career where I'm getting paid much more than the market rate, unfortunately...

Out With The Old, In With The New...

Well, lots of things have been happening since I last made an entry, so I'll list them here...

    1. LadyC (my old car) has sadly left me, but MissC (my new car) is now on the scene. Yep, the Celica has now been replaced by a much more modest Renault *ahem* Clio, but I must say, she's great! :)

    2. KayW, LittleSis, Tom and a bunch of friends all went the V festival once again. Twas a fantastic weekend,

[info]kayw and I really have got the hang of the camping thing (finally) and the performances were superb - among the highlights for me were Sinead O'Connor, Snow Patrol, The Killers, James, Editors and the Foo Fighters.

    3. After dropping [info]kaywoff at work today, since she has a dreadful cold, I managed to take my eye off the road for a split second and before I knew it the car in front of me broke heavily and ended up going into the back him :(. I couldn't have been doing more than about 5 mph, as it was heavy rush-hour traffic, but you wouldn't believe the impact and the damage to the front of MissC - the car I hit seemed to have no damage to it whatsoever, thought I recon he will still claim off of me - typical!  Anyway, this means another insurance claim, this time my fault, but I hate all the rigmarole that comes with it...

    4. The best news of all - I got a new job - yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Yep, after wanting to do something different for many years I've finally landed myself a job in the training department at the company I work for. This means that I'll be hanging up my developer coat and all what I've been doing in my career and what I'm qualified for, but I can't wait to get stuck in there and actually talk to people for a change! :)

A change is as good as a holiday...

It's been well over a month since my last journal entry, but not because things aren't going well..., no, quite the opposite really, everything is starting to make sense a bit more and I might be making some changes :o)

Had a great weekend this last one just gone. It was the i2 summer BBQ, so [info]kayw, the LM and I attended and had a spankingly good time!  You can't beat free food, free drinks, and enough space and entertainment for the LM to run around and enjoy himself :o)

[info]kayw and I also recently spent a long weekend on the Fen waterways after hiring a 55ft narrowboat. What another great weekend it was! So good in fact that we've already booked up to go again next year! :o)

The job-front is a little more bearable now too. Not only am I cycling in to work everyday, but we've had a move around and there are much more pleasant people around me now. That being said, I would still like to make a change and do something different.

I also might be selling LadyC, my beloved car. I've had her 2 years now and although she's been a perfect lady and given me many hours of enjoyment, I feel it's time to move on. This time though I want to downgrade and downsize to something more economical and environmentally friendly; I also want to by a Vespa too, so LadyC has to go...

Here are some pics I took of her recently, after getting the wheels refurbished

It was red and yellow and violet and purple and blue....

Twas a great week last week, finished off by a great weekend! J

No work on Friday, as I had booked it off to go to Brighton to see a friend of mine, Vicky, from my days at University. Was a lovely journey down there, since I particularly like travelling on trains (but not in an anorak sort of way) and by the time I arrived the weather was really nice and warm and the sun was shining. A quick pit-stop at Vicky’s to drop off my stuff and then we wandered through town over to the sea-front for some lunch and a much needed cool beer J  During lunch we decided to book tickets for that evening to go and see Boogie Nights at the Brighton Royal Theatre. The show was leaded by Antony Costa, who was formerly in the boy band Blue, and accompanied by Alvin Stardust and the guy who played Anthony, the doctor, in Eastenders. It wasn’t the best of musicals I have ever seen, but I was on holiday, so enjoyed it muchly! J

Saturday was spent roaming the streets/lanes of Brighton, spending much more than I ought to have on presents for [info]kayw, the LM, and of course myself!  Wrapped around my shopping frenzy we spent time in various bars and restaurants for lunch and the obligatory stop-offs for beer.

In the evening of Saturday, Vicky had blagged us some tickets for a night of comedy at Komedia, a place that she herself has performed stand-up comedy at before. Was a truly excellent show!  The 4 acts and the compere, Rufus Hounds, were very very good! So much so that I ended up buying a cd from Brendon Burns.

After the show we met up with some of Vicky’s friends, who also perform on the stand-up circuit and joined them for a couple of beers before calling it a night.

Sunday was spent wandering around the market, buying cheap novelty stuff and talking to some guy about getting a fireplace surround delivered to Cambridge.

Eventually the Brighton trip ended, I said farewell to Vicky, and headed up north to sunny Cambridge

When I got back to Cambridge, [info]kaywpicked me up from the station and upon setting my eyes on her I soon realised just why I love her so much and how much she means to me – needless to say that I missed her very much!  Sunday night was spent eating pizza, watching the recording of the final episode of Any Dream Will Do and vegging out on the sofa with [info]kayw.  And to end it all in a near perfect way, Lee Mead won the competition and will be the next Joseph!!!!

All good things come to those who wait...
Well, I've had a fab week so far!

On Monday I drove down to Windsor for my work's annual User Group Conference. I have previously been a few times before, though not for a few years, and always stayed for the entire conference, which includes staying over night and attending the gala dinner and free bar on the last night. However this year I was only going for the day; this is not something I was entirely happy about, as I knew it would take around 2 hours to get there and the same to return, plus missing out on the evening and the opportunity to really get to know clients and also enjoy the dinner, dancing and free bar.

Anyway, in the morning I discovered that several people had not been able to make the conference and were meant to be staying over night, so I ceased the opportunity with this knowledge in mind and later in the day asked one of the organisers if it were possible for me to take up one of their places. It took a little convincing and call to my line manager to confirm it, but the end result was that I got to stay!! :o)  I was over the moon!! :o)  However, one detail that I did overlook was the fact that didn't have an overnight bag or change of clothes, but luckily I was already dressed smart and managed to get away with it. I did however, luckily again, have my swimming kit in the boot of my car, so I took advantage of the hotel pool after the first day and just before the dinner.

I had a fabulous time there! I spoke to lots of clients and got to see the fruits of my labour, that being the software I have spent the last 7 years developing, being used by clients and what they really thought of it. Twas a great experience! :o)

Tonight is a meal with the Holbrook Towers residents over at the 'All-you-can-eat' Chinese restaurant in the Cineworld complex.

I had a superb weekend too. Made more progress with the LM on his star-destroyer and had a lovely Sunday afternoon with Dad and Marilyn. Dad's finally sorted out all the cars in his life :o) On a sad note though, he didn't look very well. He was diagnosed with Glandular fever a few weeks back and although he's apparently over the worst of it, he didn't look in fantastic shape :o(

Today also marks someone that I've only recently got to know leaving the company and starting a new life in NZ. He's such a nice guy, Dave A, and I wish I had got to know him better during his years at the company... Anyway, if ever I fancy a trip to NZ, I've been told to definitely look him up and go visit... :o)

What if everything around you isn't quite as it seems...?
    Twas a great weekend!

Breaking up early from work on Friday I went straight to the physio, which is working out very well. She recons I'll be back to full movement in about another 10 days! :o)

Friday night I attended the beer Festival with Biro-man and SmallTracey. We were supposed to meet up with [info]vorno, but the queue to get in was just too horrendous and I don't blame him either for giving it a miss. Inside the beer festival, which took a mere 35 mins of queuing to get in to, was very good. I made sure I paced it sensibly this time, well at least at the beginning...

Saturday night[info]kaywand I went out for PeteG's Birfdee bash. This involved a number of us, including [info]vorno, [info]new_brunette, Nessa, and some friends I hadn't seen for a while having a meal at the 'posh' Pizza Express in Jesus Lane, then a trip to La Raza, and ending up in The Cow. Twas great catching up with everyone...

Sunday was spent replacing various old curtains around the house with some nice new wooden venetian blinds - and wow, what a difference it makes to the rooms! :o) In the evening we met up with Biro-man and his friend Andy for a swifty in the Master Mariner.

Monday we went to Romford for an 'indoor' BBQ at Angela and Steve's. Was really nice meeting the various members of their family and I felt very comfortable spending time with them. In particular, [info]kaywand I had a great sit-down chat with Aunt Dorothy and Phyllis...

Back to work today - not easy to get back in to after the long weekend.

    All Tanked Up
Was out last night with SmallTracey and we went to what used to be called the Pike & Eel, for a pint of something nice. We chatted and caught up on things and browsed through some very interesting magazines...

Tonight I've got Tiger coming over for a cuppa at the towers residency and a well overdue catch up with him. He's in the group of people that I used to be very friendly with, but lost touch a couple of years ago. He's also not seen the house since all the work has taken place, so I'm looking forward to see what he'll make of it all.

It's the LM's birthday tomorrow - he'll have been around the sun six times now!! I can't believe how fast the time has past!  It was a Josh-weekend, this one just past, and not only was he very patient coming with me to Flaunden to pick up my wheels, but he took great pleasure in opening his birthday presents, one of which was a Lego Imperial Star Destroyer!

It's going to take an age to build, but I can't wait to see his face when it's all done and the last piece goes on! :o)

Sorry for the lack of entries, but I've had some very up and down emotions at work again (so what's new :o))

I'm starting to look upon these negative times as positive now, as it means that I'm actually starting to take action and do something about my situation. I'm looking into a lot of areas within my current job and the industry as a whole and trying to work out what it is that I want to do, and what makes best use of my strengths. I would like to keep up to date with the latest technology and become fluent in .NET, still sticking to the programmer within me, but I would also like to pursue a more people facing role, which could mean progressing to management, which I am quietly confident about doing and think I would really enjoy. I have spoken to some people here at work and it seems that they may now be taking me seriously about progressing to this kind of role, we'll see...

Other than that, I had a great weekend a couple of weeks ago when Angela & Steve came to Cambridge. We went for lunch at the Galleria, watched the punts go by, then strolled into the center of town and wandered around market square - twas very nice! :o)

Last weekend was good too. I dropped my wheels off to some dodgey back-street garage, in a place where I swear they must have filmed some sort of chain-saw or mad axe-man type film, to be refurbished. The wheels were in a terrible state in some places and so can't wait to have a nice new shiny set of wheels to finish off my car.

Last night was the first 'Life Drawing' class, which was very interesting. I can't believe just how tiring it was to be learning new skills in how to draw the human body. The sheer amount of concentration left me very tired afterwards indeed, though I still managed to sneak a pint in at the Master Mariner with Biro-man...

This weekend is a Josh weekend, and it's the weekend before his birthday. I have bought him a few bits already, but his main present will be to take him to the toy shop and have him pick out something that he wants, which I'm guessing will be Lego based...

Oh, and I started Physio on my foot on Tuesday. Already it feels a lot better, now that I am doing the correct stretching for it and they blasted it with ultra-sound. I have another appointment today and this should be a weekly thing for the next 6 weeks, I'm guessing. Need I say it again, but I can't wait to get back to running around and playing sport again!!! :o)

We’re off to see the wizard!

    A fantastic weekend was had!!

Friday kicked off with me fitting the cant-rails to my fence posts – finally, after having them sit on my patio for the past 5 weeks!

Friday evening was Homemade Pizza night; Biroman came over at 19:30 and after 3 bottles of the red stuff, some yummy homemade pizza and much conversation, he left at 1:30am!!  Twas a splendid night! :o)

On Saturday [info]kayw and I drove to London to see LittleSis and Tom for our night out and wedding present. We knew it was tickets for the theatre but we didn’t know which show it was until after dinner and actually walking in to the venue – so, I can now reveal that we saw a show called Wicked.  If you haven’t heard of it, which I hadn’t before Saturday, it’s a show written by some bonkers clever chap which is the prequel to The Wizard Of Oz. It’s all about the wicked witch of the west and how she came about. It’s absolutely brilliant and I totally recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the original film!  It really is a big stage musical production, showing at the Apollo theatre at Victoria and apparently it’s not very easy to get tickets for as it’s extremely popular right now… Oh, and Nigel Planner (Niel from the Young Ones) plays the wonderful wizard himself! :o)

Sunday was spent sleeping off most of the weekend, after 2 very late nights for us lightweights, but eventually we surfaced and got some DIY/garden chores done before jumping on the bikes and going for a wander around the grounds of Cherry Hinton Hall.

Finally, since we missed Dr Who on Sat night, we managed to catch the repeat on BBC3, much to our pleasure… :o)

Build them up, knock them down!
I'm back at work now (after my foot op), have been for the past 2 weeks, and it's been an up and down experience... I'm so happy to be able to walk again, though I am certainly not going to win any running events just yet.

It's been nice to be back at work - I feel somewhat grounded again, but I've had to contend with being told that despite the company restructuring, I won't be doing anything new as I'm too valuable a member on my team - *bulls!*

Still, at least I'm still getting paid a good wage and without the responsibility of being a manager and without being on a new team doing something new that might not be work and then getting stressed about being made redundant...

Other than work, it was a good weekend the last one with the LM. He was on top form and makes me so happy knowing he is there at the weekend, even if we don't spend every minute together...

Tonight is another home-made pizza night, this time it's just Biro-man as the others that we asked couldn't make it.

Tomorrow, LittleSis and Tom are taking us out to London somewhere for a surprise :o)  As their wedding gift to us, they decided they would book us some tickets for the theatre, and that moment has finally come around. So, very much looking forward to that! :o)

Yep, it's come around pretty quick, which is all good! :o)

Twas a good weekend.  We had visitations from my sister, Tom, dad & Marilyn, and of course the LM was here throughout.

My foot is hurting less, which is a good thing as the cast comes off tomorrow morning, and I'm crossing everything in hope that I'll be given a green light (if not semi-green) to actually put pressure on it and walk again - *please, please*

    Day Six

As the title says, it's day six since the operation, and I've been through some very big highs and lows. On the whole I'm feeling positive and can't wait to get the green light to put pressure on my foot and get back to running, not to mention just being able to walk on it...

It's not fun being stuck in the house when all you want to do is get on with the DIY jobs, especially  since I am now able to see the jobs that need doing in greater detail than when I come home from working during the day. But, I just need to be patient and then I'll be able to do them.

The house does look good I've decided, despite me having oodles more time on my hands and going through the internet looking at houses and deciding 'Yes, I want to move!', I know that I'd be hard pushed to find something that matches this house and I know from experience just how good a wide-angled lens can make a house shown on the internet look far better than when you pitch up and realise that it's half the size as you thought... Not to mention the cost of conveyancing, estate agents, stamp-duty, mortgage arrangements, etc, etc...

I'm getting through plenty of DVDs and thanks to the guys at work I've now got another stack of DVDs to get through, 14 in total, including the first series of Life On Mars, so plenty there to keep me going.

My cast comes off Thursday week  (12th April) - can't wait!!  Hope it means I can walk straight away, but I have my doubts and recon I'm going to be pestered by all; nurses, consultants and the wife to take it easy...

Oh, one more interesting thing, the guy who decided he'd drive into my car has also decided he's not going to complete his incident report form, so my insurance company is taking him to court - excellent!  It does mean that I have to wait longer for my excess, but at least something is now getting sorted with it.

    Here's a random photo I've had of

[info]kayw on my phone for a while, and I've just managed to get my phone/pc link to work again, so thought I'd share it with you.

    What's It All About?
Well, it's Sunday afternoon and I'm sitting in my living room with my left foot resting on a pillow on the coffee table. The Friday just gone I went into the Cambridge BUPA Lea hospital and handed over my left foot to the capable hands of Dr Robinson to cut/file down the part of my heel bone that's been pushing against my achilles tendon and causing me so much pain.

All seems to have been a success and now it's just a waiting game for it to heal, which involves me having 2 weeks off work, plenty of rest and no load or pressure on the foot. I now have a shiny new pair of crutches to help me out during this time.

Other than that, not much to report... [info]kayw, SmallTracey and I attended the pub quiz last week and surprise surprise, we won it!! :o)

    All forgotten
A good, if not tiring, weekend was had...

The main theme of it was trying to put up a fence... Now, had Ridgeons had delivered the bits I needed in time, and had the weather had not been so obstinate with the wind, I might have got the fence up, but unfortunately, all I have to show for my labour is 3 big holes (where the posts will fit) and perfectly cut and treated bits of wood.  I did however treat myself to a circular saw, courtesy of a trip to ScrewFix's trade counter opening day in Cambridge.

Sat night was great!  [info]kaywand I joined Giles, Alice, Tony, Andy Pilot and [info]vornofor a few pints in the Castle - much fun!

    A long long time ago

Gosh, it's been exactly one month since I last made an entry...

All was going well in my life and everything was good, but then I hit a real low :o(  I had applied for an internal position at work and was very excited about the propsect or embracing a new start doing something new (god I had got so bored in my current role).

Anyway, after waiting a couple of months, I wondered what was happening with my request - and this is when I hit the low...

I was told that there are no positions in the department I had applied for and nothing planned for the future. This wasn't the thing that sent me over the edge, but it was the fact that I had to further inquire before they told me, and then I had one hell of an email from our beloved Human Resources department, which led to me having a very heated discussion with the HR manager, which was enough to make anyone want to leave...

I checked out the job market, but nothing pays anything close to what I earn here, so I'm afraid I am selling my sole to my current job in return for the high income, reduced hours, and free lunch :o)

Maybe in a few months they will sort themselves out, since they are going through a major restructuring program right now, and then I might get that job that I wanted, but for now I am happy (in a manner of speaking) to stay put.

    La di da...

    We Are The Champions!!

Well, after 3 weeks of doing the Horningsea pub quiz, last night was finally our turn to win!!  Fantastic!!  I couldn't believe it!!

And, the evil team that normally win it were there in full strength, supporting 6 members to our 3 (that was me, Biroman, and SmallTracey), so it was a double wammy to beat them too!  We thought it was going to be tough when we found out that the specialist round was on the Battle Of Britain, but thanks to Biroman's history knowledge and airfix model making, we came up trumps!  And as usual SmallTracey and I land-slided the music and film round! :o)

The weekend good and vey busy. Friday night we were taken out by [info]vornofor a belated birthday meal at the Backstreet Bistro. I was initially nervous about the food there, since I knew it wasn't going to be basic, but I actually enjoyed it very much!  And, I shall returneth there in the near future!  We dined for quite a few hours, and after a too much wine, both red and white, and then [info]vorno surprising us with some champagne too, we staggered into a cab and headed home - top night! :o)

We arose on Saturday morning with very sore heads and headed down to Milton Keynes to spend the day and evening with [info]kayw's brother and wife. Twas really nice to see them both and we all got along very well.

Sunday was spent completely valeting my car - something I used to enjoy doing quite a bit, but I haven't done in a while... After spending a few hours doing that, I then launched in to some DIY around house... We were supposed to go out on Sunday evening, but we were both too zonked to go... :o(

Oh, and thanks to [info]vorno, [info]kaywand I are now the proud owners of a breadmaker - hurrah! :o)

    Is there life on mars...?

After giving away my secret to [info]kaywthat I had been planning something for Valentines day (yes yes, I know, I got sucked into the whole commercialism of it all), I think I managed to pull it off with great success!

I left work early, got the last few bits from the supermarket, and proceeded to make a 3 course meal for [info]kayw and I. It wasn't easy, giving that it's the first time I've ever done this before, but all worked out well, and I really did enjoy it... Might have to make it a regular thing...

Tonight [info]kayw's out with [info]vorno, so I'm home alone again for the second time this week, but I can't complain as it means I get some quality me time again and get to watch some trashy TV and maybe do some drawing or painting...

Tomorrow night we're out with [info]vornofor a belated birthday meal at the Backstreet Bistro. Should be good, though I'm getting my usual nerves of not knowing if there there's anything on the menu that I'll actually eat/enjoy...

On Saturday [info]kaywand I are going to see her bro Pieter and his wife Sonja. We haven't seen them since the wedding so it'll be good to catch up.

A good weekend was most certainly had. The LM was on cute form for most of the time, though he did get a little ratty towards the end of the weekend. We took him to see Auther and the Invisibles, which was great veiwing, and he thoroughly enjoyed it!

[info]kayw and [info]vorno popped out on Saturday to go bread-maker shopping. Apparantly we now have bread-maker which is on order and should be delivered to us at the end of the week - oh I look forward to waking up on a weekend to the smell of freshly baked bread :o)

I got lots of DIY done on Sunday - I finally got round to putting the shelves up in the utility area of the kitchen and it now looks much better there and much more functional too. I did however struggle putting my mud-guards on my bike; it would have been nice for the shop where I bought them from to have supplied some instructions and all the components needed to fit them!

Last night was quiz night at the Plough & Fleece with SmallTracey; we were also joined by a mystery guest, Biroman!  Twas a good night and we even came second!; much better than last week...

Tonight there's no portraiture as it's half-term.  [info]kayw is out with Clarewitch so I am going to take advantage of the free house and have a night in.

Twas another good night at portraiture... For once we had not just one, but two new models to draw *hurrah!*.  I was getting a bit peeved with drawing the same 3 or 4 models we've been having for the past year or so, so it lovely to see a fresh face...

I seem to be really mastering the accuracy of capturing what's infront of me now. I am so glad to have bagged this skill, so now I can concentrate on sharpening my detail and before long go back to painting and get some colour in there! :o)

After the session, BiroMan and I went to the pub, where we were joined by mad-girl (who was totally on top form last night) and even Jenny, the course tutor.  Was very nice talking to Jenny and learning from someone that can actually draw 'properly' as well as talking to her about things other than art, which is always nice too, as I'm sure these evening class tutors don't want to only talk about their job whilst they're down the pub...

No portraiture next week, it's half-term *sniff!*, but after that I have convinced CraigH (my work colleague) to model for us.

Tonight I am home alone. [info]kayw is going over to [info]vorno's for some UK QAF, so I'll be on my tod, which will give me a chance to scalp myself cut my hair, watch some trashy TV, and maybe grab an early one.

It was minus 8 degrees last night outside, according to my weather station, so god only knows what it might drop down to tonight - thank god for having central heating that works *touch wood!*.

Lastly, I went for run today at the gym - damn my achilles was hurting - so having this operation at the end of next month couldn't really come sooner...
